I've installed the Yoast SEO plugin and have updated the meta title and description for my front page but the meta tags still have the original theme info in them. How can I update these?

I am sorry for the late reply, we did not work on the weekend.
Huh, is that so? If you've updated the google will need some time to re-update them. We had the same problem with Google 1 day ago, we used their tool to re crawl the website.
I don't think Google has anything to do with this because I'm viewing the source code from the web page and it still has the old title and description. Google is only going to pick up what is in the source code. Am I wrong?

That seems to be the OG description, which means it is the description that is added on the facebook & twitter cards.
