You need to show on the first portfolio page at least one project from each category, you can take a look at the following screenshots, when I change the order, on the page, there are projects from three different categories, and the category is shown in the filter then.

The filter doesn't show up properly on the page above.
I set a total of 6 including the 'all' filter to be visible, but only 4 including the 'all' filter are visible
